Is a Certain StockTwits Trader Legit?

StockTwits attaches a bullish or bearish tag and a symbol to each message, so its calls are the easiest of any social venue to score against the chart. The tag is also the easiest thing to spam, and messages can be deleted, so score a sample yourself rather than reading the profile's own summary.

Why is this venue easy to score?

Because the data is structured. Every message is tied to a symbol, and the author can tag it bullish or bearish. That gives you three of the five things a scoreable call needs — symbol, direction, timestamp — and leaves you to find the entry and the stop in the text.

Compared with a Discord message in prose, that is a real advantage. You can pull an account's last 30 tagged messages and check each one against what the stock did over the following days, without interpreting anything.

What does that same structure invite?

Volume as strategy. Tagging bullish on 40 symbols a day guarantees that some were right, and screenshots of the winners can then be posted forever. A high hit rate over a large number of untimed, unsized calls means very little.

Direction without levels. A bullish tag with no entry, stop or horizon can be claimed as correct on almost any subsequent chart. Score only the calls that carry levels; the proportion of an account's messages that do is itself the measurement.

Deletion. Messages can be removed, and the stream closes over the gap.

Follower counts and watchers. Cheap, farmed, and unrelated to whether the calls resolved.

How do you audit a stream in fifteen minutes?

1. Take 20 tagged messages from a month ago. Old enough to have resolved, recent enough to be relevant.

2. Score each against a 5-day horizon. Fix the horizon before you look, or you will unconsciously pick the window that flatters the account.

3. Count how many carried an entry and a stop. If it is under half, the account is not making scoreable calls, whatever its hit rate looks like.

4. Convert to something meaningful. A 60% hit rate at a 1:1 payoff is an edge; a 90% hit rate at 0.1:1 is not — it needs to win about 10 trades in 11 to break even. Without sizes and stops, hit rate on its own is not a performance number at all.

What would actually settle it?

The tagging is what makes this venue scoreable, which matters in a category where social-media-originated investment scams accounted for $1.1bn of reported US consumer losses in 2024.[1] A scoreable feed is not a record, but it is more than most venues offer.

Scoreable is not the same as complete. A feed you can grade is still the part the author left up, and whatever came down never enters the score. That is survivorship bias, measured on fund performance in 1992.[2]

A record kept outside the room, where each call is timestamped before the fact and cannot be revised afterwards, with sizes and exits rather than sentiment tags. kappi records the whole trade — entry, stop, target, size — committed before it resolves and published when the time capsule opens, with PnL, RME, correlation to SPX, mean R:R and trade count over 30, 100 and 200-day windows on the profile. $15/month.

A sentiment tag says which way someone leaned. A record says what they risked, when, and how it ended, and only the second one can be wrong in a way that costs them anything.

Frequently asked questions

Are StockTwits bullish and bearish tags reliable?

They are reliable as a record of the tag, not of a trade. A tag with no entry, stop or horizon cannot be scored strictly, and tagging dozens of symbols a day guarantees some winners to screenshot later.

How do I score a StockTwits account's calls?

Take 20 tagged messages from a month ago, fix a horizon such as five days before you look, and check each against the chart. Count how many carried an entry and a stop; under half means the calls are not scoreable.

Does a high hit rate on StockTwits mean a trader is good?

Not by itself. A 90% hit rate at a 0.1:1 payoff loses money, and without sizes and stops a hit rate is not a performance number. Payoff ratio and position size decide the outcome.

Can StockTwits messages be deleted?

Yes, and the stream closes over the gap. That is why a sample you score yourself is worth more than any summary the account publishes about itself.
