How Do You Verify a Trading Signal Provider?

Verify a signal provider by checking whether every call was published before the fact and whether the record can still be edited. If calls appear only after they resolve, or the channel allows deletion, there is no record to evaluate — regardless of the results shown.

Ask one question first

Before pricing, strategy or testimonials: where can I see every call you made, including the losing ones, timestamped before the fact?

The answer sorts the field immediately. A provider with a complete pre-committed record will link it. A provider without one will offer something adjacent — screenshots, a results page, a testimonial wall, an invitation to a free channel — and the substitution is the answer.

Evidence, ranked

What they offerWorth
Screenshots of winning tradesNothing
A results page they maintainNothing — self-reported and self-selected
TestimonialsNothing — chosen by outcome
A public channel with visible historySome, if deletions are detectable
Third-party verified accountModerate — real fills, but selection remains
Complete pre-committed immutable recordThe only form that answers the question

Five specific tests

1. Count the losers. Any real strategy loses 30–60% of the time. A feed showing a 90% win rate is either counting scratches as wins, deleting losers, or reporting entries without exits. Ask directly what the win rate is and what the average loss is — vagueness on the second is diagnostic.

2. Check whether calls precede outcomes. Scroll back and find calls that lost. If the channel contains only resolved winners, the losers were removed. Absence of losses is the single strongest signal that a record is curated.

3. Test for edit and delete. Discord and Telegram both permit both. Ask whether the history is complete and how you could tell. A provider who has thought about this has an answer; one who has not will find the question strange.

4. Look for exits, not just entries. Plenty of feeds post entries enthusiastically and fall silent on positions that go wrong. An entry with no published exit is an unresolved trade being quietly dropped from the record.

5. Ask for the drawdown. Every real trader has one. A provider who cannot state their worst peak-to-trough period either has not measured it or does not want to say. Both are disqualifying, and a specific uncomfortable number is a strong positive signal.

Marketing patterns that correlate with nothing behind them

  • Returns quoted with no period ("+400%" over an unspecified span).
  • Lifestyle imagery substituting for statistics.
  • Urgency and limited spots — a genuinely profitable edge does not need a countdown.
  • Win rate emphasised while payoff ratio is never mentioned; a 90% win rate at 0.1:1 loses money.
  • "Verified" with no explanation of by whom, how, or over what period.

If they use kappi

A kappi profile answers most of the above structurally rather than by assurance: every commit is sealed before the fact, published when the time capsule opens, and anchored so the record cannot be pruned. You can read the losses because they cannot be removed. The profile carries PnL, RME, correlation to SPX, mean R:R and trade count over 30, 100 and 200-day windows.

What it still cannot tell you is whether the same person also runs other accounts they do not advertise. Judge the record in front of you as a complete record of that account, which is exactly what it is — and no more.

The base rate justifies asking. US consumers reported $5.7bn lost to investment scams in 2024 — the largest single category the FTC tracks[1] — and $1.1bn of social-media scam losses were investment scams specifically, over half the social-media total.[2] Most providers are not fraudulent. All of them are being evaluated against that number, and the ones with a record can step straight out of it.

kappi is a trade recorder: you commit a trade before the fact, it is sealed on your device for a time-capsuled delay you choose, and published afterwards on a Merkle-anchored log a reader can check without kappi's cooperation. $15/month, no free tier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a signal provider is legitimate?

Ask to see every call, including losers, timestamped before the fact. If they offer screenshots, a self-maintained results page or testimonials instead, that substitution is your answer.

What win rate should make me suspicious?

Anything above roughly 80% sustained. Real strategies lose 30–60% of the time, and a very high win rate usually means losers are being deleted or entries are posted without exits.

Is a public Discord history good enough evidence?

Only partly. Discord permits editing and deletion, so a visible history does not establish completeness. Ask how you would detect a removed call.

What single question is most revealing?

Ask for their worst peak-to-trough drawdown and the period it covered. Everyone real has one, and a specific uncomfortable answer is a strong positive signal.

Let's set some records

Broker-import journals prove what you did after the fact, from data you control. kappi timestamps what you said you would do, before you knew how it would turn out, on a record you cannot edit.
